Launch of the model Lady Nelson

On Thursday 23rd February Friends of Churchill Island Society held a special event in the Churchill Island Visitor Centre where model ship builder David Lumsden 'launched' his model of the Lady Nelson in front of 40 people. The model is built on the scale of 1:24, and measures about 1m long and 1.2m high, including the three sliding keels which are shown lowered. David was able to tell the gathering of his challenges in making the model when few plan details are available. He also described the difficulties of living and working in such a small ship. The real Lady Nelson ship was only 15m long and 5m wide and somehow accommodated 17 crew! Apart from being the first decked ship to enter Western Port in 1801, she became the first ship to explore Port Phillip later that year.
